Sledgehammer and images (14/11/2012)

  • First I researched images of sledgehammers in order to make sure I knew what one looked like e.g. a curved handle for gripping etc.
  • Pressing F4 in order to see the grids on my object, I then created a cylinder with a height of 14 and a radius of 4. Then I made sure to reduce its 18 sides to 10.
  • I then reduced its height segments to 3 and scaled down its X axis to make it look more like something that can be held.
  • By right clicking the object I converted it into a Editable Poly. Going onto Edge mode I selected the two middle lines going across by selecting ‘Loop’ followed by clicking one of the lines.
  • I then scaled all the lines until they came out looking even more like a handle. This included making sure the bottom of the handle was slightly smaller than the top and that the whole thing was longer.
  • I then used Bevel at the bottom of the object in order to give it a rounded bottom.
  • I then added a box directly over its top view point, making sure it had 3 width segments.
  • I then selected the box and chose the ‘Align’ tool in order to make the box in the dead centre with the options ‘centre’/ ‘centre’ before then making it near the top with ‘maximum’ / ‘maximum’.
  • Then  converted the box into a Editable Poly before shrinking the sides of it.
  • Making the box a lighter shade of colour I then used the ‘Ring’ tool alongside ‘Edge’ select in order to select the lines on the opposite end of the box.
  • Right clicking the object I selected the small box next to ‘Chamfer’ in order to make the lines selected look like the sides of a hammer. I kept with its default coordinates.
  • Selecting the sides of the box with ‘Polygon’ I then used ‘Bevel’ in order to bring the sides slightly out. This made the block more hammer like. I then raised the box again to make it into my own hammer design as it didn't have the top of the grip poking out as some hammers do. Therefore I also deleted the top of the grip as it won't be seen and therefore rendering time won't be wasted.
  • Going to the top left corner I then selected the scene's original viewing style and made it just ‘Consistent colors’ without ‘Shadows’ or ‘Ambient Occlusion’. Thus making it look like just a cel shaded hammer.
  • Selecting the box I then went onto the modifier list and choose Unwrap UVW before selecting ‘Open UV Editor’.
  • Scrolling down the ‘UV Editor’ to ‘Projections’ I then…
Need to go back to this as I have no further notes!

Recognising that I have not been keeping track of the layers I have been using and am unsure if I need to I made the reference list below.
